Ever check out the "Pending Delete" list?  These are domain names are a week away from public registration.  Many companies utilize a back order system, which allows the domain to be purchased by a new buyer as soon as it's available.  For a fee.  Because some of the names on this tend to be highly valuable, day after day, domaining companies provide Domain Catching services.  Domain Catching is the process of snagging that expired domain name the second it becomes available, usually using computing resources that are unavailable to an individual investor. Clearly the big dogs have an advantage here, but there is a silver lining: many, many gems get missed.  The practice of reviewing a Pending Delete list at least once a week for new opportunities is highly recommended. Some of these companies understand the inherent value in compiling thousands of quality keyword .coms with an overhead of around $10/years.
